Mightier than the sword

The pen is mightier than the sword’. So wrote Lytton in 1838, but the sentiment behind the observation has been true since men and women first started writing and is still true today. A modern variation might be: ‘Words can be more destructive than weapons.’ But words can also be a force for good.

Many people, upset by what they see going on around them, feel frustrated that they cannot influence the way things are done. In our current unsettled world the notion of ‘democracy’ is tainted by voter apathy and unfair or corrupt electoral processes. An outlet for this frustration is the chance to air one’s views in a public forum in the hope of influencing others. For some commentators, a soapbox on a street corner, perhaps, or a debating chamber. For others, a written letter or article.

iamwritingto.com is a website designed to emulate the ‘Letters to the Editor’ feature found in most newspapers and magazines. Contributors are invited to submit comment on subjects listed here. Besides the portentous topics of politics, wars, disasters and social evils there is room to reflect humorously on the absurdity of the world and its ways. Once the website becomes well-established, longer articles will also be welcome, with cartoons and illustrations if desired. It is anticipated that in certain circumstances payments will be offered to writers whose work is published on the website.

‘I am writing to . . .’ differs from other internet forums in that submissions cannot be posted directly on to the site. Rather, they are processed by the editor, who will determine which submissions will be published on the website. The intention is to achieve a balance of opinion reflecting the varied views that writers will have. The content of the pages will be updated at regular intervals.
